All MWPBA judges must reside in the MWPBA boundaries (as set by ANAPBA); relocation outside MWPBA boundaries results in automatic removal from the MWPBA adjudication panel.

 
Minimum requirements to qualify to be a Piping Judge:
FULL PIPING JUDGE ASSOCIATE PIPING JUDGE
Be at least a Grade 1 caliber solo player (as determined by the Music Board Be at least a Grade 2 caliber solo player (as determined by the Music Board)
Have had a reasonable amount of success in solo competition at the highest level
Be current and active in teaching, band playing, competing, and/or studying
Have been a competitor for a minimum of 10 years Have been a competitor for a minimum of 7 years
Have at least 10 years experience of competitive participation in a Grade 1 or 2 band AND teaching experience in piping Have at least 7 years experience of competitive participation in a Grade 1, 2, or 3 band AND teaching experience in piping
After meeting these requirements, a candidate must shadow judge a minimum of 3 contests, both solo and band contests; the placing and comments will be reviewed by the Music Board

 

Minimum requirements to qualify to be a Drumming Judge:
FULL DRUMMING* JUDGE ASSOCIATE DRUMMING JUDGE
Be at least a Grade 1 caliber solo player (as determined by the Music Board Be at least a Grade 2 caliber solo player (as determined by the Music Board)
Have had a reasonable amount of success in solo competition at the highest level
Be current and active in teaching, band playing, competing, and/or studying
Have been a competitor for a minimum of 10 years Have been a competitor for a minimum of 7 years
Have at least 10 years experience of competitive participation in a Grade 1 or 2 band AND teaching experience in drumming Have at least 7 years experience of competitive participation in a Grade 1, 2, or 3 band AND teaching experience in drumming
After meeting these requirements, a candidate must shadow judge a minimum of 3 contests, both solo and band contests; the placing and comments will be reviewed by the Music Board
* Full Drumming Certification includes tenor and bass.
Tenor and Bass Judge must fulfill the same qualifications as Full Drumming Judge.
 
Minimum requirements to qualify to be an Ensemble Judge:
ENSEMBLE JUDGE
Meet all of the qualifications to judge within their respective discipline
Be a Pipe Major or Leading Drummer of a Grade 1 or 2 band or have an understanding of both instruments or have been involved in a senior leadership position in a Grade 1 or 2 band
Have been a competitor for a minimum of 10 years
Have at least 10 years experience of competitive participation in a Grade 1 or 2 band AND teaching experience in piping or drumming
After meeting these requirements, a candidate must shadow judge a minimum of 3 contests; the placing and comments will be reviewed by the Music Board.

 

Once it has been determined that a candidate meets the above requirements, discrete adjudication level is assigned for band and solos as follows:
 
Adjudication Levels:
LEVEL PIPING JUDGE DRUMMING JUDGE
FULL May judge all grades of band and solo competition in the discipline in which they are qualified
ASSOCIATE May judge novice through 2 in the solos, and Grade 5 through 3 in band competition in the discipline in which they are qualified
ENSEMBLE May judge all band grades in ensemble playing
PIOBAIREACHD May judge to the grade consistent with status as a FULL or ASSOCIATE adjudicator. -

 To apply to join the MWPBA judging panel, submit this application form. All judges are required to register as an MWPBA each season.

All judges are required to attend one professional development event during a two year period. Adjudicator training events offered by another ANAPBA association will satisfy this requirement.
