Terry McHugh (1932-2011) MWPBA President (1980-1987) (2025 inaugural inductee) Terry McHugh was a long-serving member of the Chicago-area piping and drumming scene and a founder of the Midwest Pipe Band Association, a fledgling organization that he resurrected in the late 1970s and brought into the formal structure that exists today. Terry McHugh was a staunch player, teacher, and supporter of the pipe band community. He was Pipe-Sergeant and then Pipe-Major of the Shannon Rovers Pipe Band. In 1974, he was a founding member and later Pipe-Major of the Invermich Gaelic Society Pipe Band, taking the group to Grade 2 in 1989. He later started and led the Doonaree Pipe Band. All along that journey, he strove to improve the piping and band community in general. |
Jim I. Sim D/S, Stock Yard Kilty Pipe Band (1952-1975) MWPBA Chief Steward (1988-1997) (2025 inaugural inductee) |
Ian Swinton P/M, Midlothian Scottish Pipe Band (1975-2009) MWPBA Adjudicator (2025 inaugural inductee) Ian Swinton co-founded Midlothian Scottish Pipe Band as a Grade 4 band after moving to the United States from Scotland in 1968. He immediately established a teaching program in the Midlothian area of Chicago, and gradually built the talent in the band to the point where, in the 1970s, it became and remained a pre-eminent band in the midwest. Under his leadership as Pipe-Major, Midlothian Scottish rose to Grade 1 status in 1985, and remained at the top grade for several years before settling back to Grade 2. He retired from competition in 2008 after 34 years at the helm.
Ian taught and mentored too many pipers to count and most to an extremely high standard. Many of those students have gone on to be excellent teachers in their own right.
