2016 Outdoor Contest Registration Forms Now Open

The 2016 Outdoor Contest Registration Forms are now available and on-line, for both bands and soloists.  Please note that the St. Louis Scottish Games and Cultural Festival are now a Champion Supreme event with more prize money available, and that there are several changes to the solo contests for the both the Chicago Scots Scottish Festival and Highland Games, as well as the aforementioned St. Louis Highland Games.  Some grades have their solos on Friday, some on Saturday.  Breakdowns of events and grades are available here, or by clicking on the 2016 Contests link and starting the registration process.

2016 Lexington Regional Piping Solos Results

You're automatically enrolled in the finals for the Terry McHugh Solo Piping Contest to be held on April 9 in Palatine, IL.  We hope to see you there!


2016 MWPBA Regional Solos entry now open (Piping & Drumming)


Entries are now open for drummers (snare/tenor/bass) for the April 09 Jim Enright, Sr. Memorial Solo Drumming Contest in Palatine, IL.  The closing date is March 27, 2016.


Entry is still open for the 2016 MWPBA Regional Solos competition (St. Paul, MN) -- the last chance to qualify for the third annual Terry McHugh Memorial Solo Piping Contest


These contests are open to all Amateur Grades in light music piping, snare, tenor and bass. The top 3 qualifiers in each GRADE (not event) will qualify to play at the finals to be held in Palatine. See entry form for details, and for closing dates for entries.


For 2016, only piping contests will be held at the regional qualifier events. Drumming contests will be held only at the finals in Palatine, IL on April 09. Piping finalists will automatically be enrolled into the Terry McHugh Memorial contest; there is no need to re-register.  Drummers only need enroll in the April 09 date.

The qualifier dates are:

  • Feb 20 - Alma, MI

  • Feb 27 - Lexington, KY

  • Mar 05 - Milwaukee, WI (New Berlin)

  • Mar 05 - Kansas City, MO

  • Apr 02 - St. Paul, MN

The drumming contest date is:

  • Apr 09 - Palatine, IL

2016 Alma Regional Piping Solos Results

A big thanks to everyone who participated in the Alma Regional Piping Solos; its a great start to 2016!

2016 MWPBA Adjudicators Seminar

On Saturday, February 13th, the MWPBA held their annual Adjudication Seminar at the Scottish Home in North Riverside, IL. MWPBA Adjudicators must attend one of the all-day seminars every two years to retain their status on the judging panel; the session was moderated by Ken Eller from Fonthill, Ontario.


9 of the 23 MWPBA Adjudicators attended the seminar; here is a photo from the seminar.


Some of the topics that were covered during the seminar include:

  • Solutions for judging dilemmas
  • Positioning in different band formations
  • Ensemble judging
  • Practical judging training
  • What to listen for in certain situations

The feedback from the session was positive and encouraging.


Light music and piobaireachd adjudicator exams will be taking place in March.
